📖 Course Overview
The SSI Navigation Specialty Course is a comprehensive program designed to transform you into a confident, self-reliant underwater navigator. Over 1.5 days, you'll complete two dedicated open water dives focused exclusively on developing your navigation skills, supported by classroom sessions covering theory and practical techniques.
The academic portion covers both natural navigation (using environmental clues like sunlight, wave patterns, bottom composition, and depth contours) and compass navigation (including compass parts, bearing-taking, reciprocal courses, and navigation patterns like squares and triangles). You'll learn how to estimate distances underwater, measure kick cycles, and use landmarks effectively.
During the practical dives, you'll practice navigating out and back using a compass, creating and following navigation patterns, estimating distances traveled, and locating specific points underwater. You'll learn how to navigate in low visibility, use natural references effectively, and maintain situational awareness throughout the dive.
Upon successful completion, you'll earn the SSI Navigation Specialty certification. You'll never worry about getting lost again — instead, you'll lead dives with confidence, find your way back effortlessly, and explore new sites without hesitation.
