📖 Course Overview
The SSI Rescue Diver course is one of the most challenging and rewarding courses in recreational diving. It transforms your diving mindset from "self-sufficient diver" to "diver who can prevent and respond to emergencies." Over 2-3 days, you'll complete a combination of theory sessions, confined water practice, and open water rescue scenarios.
The academic portion covers self-rescue techniques, recognizing and managing stress in other divers, emergency management and equipment, first aid and CPR skills, panic prevention, and rescue response planning. You'll learn how to identify potential problems before they escalate and develop the judgment to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
During pool and confined water sessions, you'll practice essential rescue skills including tired diver tows, panicked diver responses, unresponsive diver recovery, underwater search patterns, emergency ascent assistance, and proper victim handling techniques. Each skill is practiced repeatedly until you can perform them confidently and efficiently.
Open water scenarios simulate real-life emergencies — from minor issues like equipment problems to major incidents like unresponsive divers at depth. You'll practice coordinating with other divers, managing bystanders, and executing complete rescue responses from recognition through to evacuation. Scenarios are challenging but controlled, with instructor supervision ensuring safety throughout.
Upon successful completion, you'll earn the SSI Rescue Diver certification — a prerequisite for all professional-level courses (Divemaster and Instructor). Rescue Diver is also a required step toward the prestigious SSI Master Diver rating. More importantly, you'll gain the confidence and competence to respond effectively if the unthinkable happens.
