📖 Course Overview

The SSI Wreck Diving Specialty course is an immersive program designed to teach you how to safely explore sunken vessels, aircraft, and artificial reefs. Over 4 days, you'll complete four dedicated wreck dives under the direct supervision of a certified SSI Instructor, supported by comprehensive classroom sessions covering wreck history, navigation, hazards, and preservation ethics.

The academic portion covers wreck classification (intentional vs. accidental sinkings), wreck research and history, legal considerations, environmental impact, and marine life colonization patterns. You'll learn about common wreck hazards including entanglement risks, sharp edges, unstable structures, and overhead environments. The course also addresses limited penetration techniques, line use, and emergency procedures specific to wreck diving.

During the practical wreck dives, you'll practice wreck approach and entry techniques, navigation around and inside wrecks (limited penetration only), line handling, and maintaining situational awareness. You'll learn how to identify hazardous areas, avoid silt-outs, manage buoyancy around fragile wreck structures, and observe marine life that has colonized the wreck.

Upon successful completion, you'll earn the SSI Wreck Diving Specialty certification. This highly respected certification qualifies you to safely explore wreck sites worldwide — from shallow, open wrecks suitable for recreational divers to more advanced sites as you gain experience.
