π Whale Shark Trip to Teluk Saleh β What to Expect
Start early from Sumbawa Besar or nearby villages. Briefing on safety + wildlife etiquette: proper distance, no chasing, no touching.
Travel by traditional outrigger or speedboat (15 minβ1 hour). Calm bay waters, sunrise views over the ocean.
Sightings are relatively consistent β the bay is a natural feeding ground. Look for large shadows, dorsal fins, boats gathering.
Enter with mask, snorkel, fins. Whale sharks glide slowly beneath you β calm, curious, up to 10β12 meters.
Use wide-angle (GoPro works great), stay slightly ahead of the shark for best shots.
β No touching, chasing, blocking. β Stay 3β4m from body, enter water calmly. Choose eco-conscious operators.
Beyond whale sharks: reef fish, turtles, dolphins (occasionally), coral reefs around the bay.
Typical trip: 3β5 hours. Best season: AprilβOctober (dry season). Best time: early morning.
Return to shore/homestay for breakfast/rest, then continue journey or head back to Lombok.
Sightings are very likely but not guaranteed. Choose operators prioritizing minimal interference, no forced feeding, controlled swimmer numbers.
Surfing at Lakey Peak, visiting traditional villages, exploring quiet untouched beaches.
β οΈ Key Things to Know: Very tight schedule (Day 2 is long & physically demanding). Weather dependent β sightings not 100% guaranteed. Sea conditions can be rough β bring motion sickness meds. Choose ethical operators following responsible wildlife practices.
